Banks have a choice between building embedded network ties that are overlaid with social context and arm’s-length ties that facilitate individual competition.

Suggestion

1) Maintaining a mix of arm’s-length and embedded relationships represents a disadvantageous network strategy. 

-> Not only simultaneously exposes investment banks to competition from their peers, relying primarily upon embedded or arm’s-length ties, but also sends confusing signals about banks’ networking behavior.

2) The link between relational embeddedness and performance is moderated by banks’ positional embeddedness, reflected in their status, and find that banks of higher status extract greater benefits from maintaining embedded ties, as compared with banks of lower status.

하지만 Shipilov(2005)에서는 저자와 상반되는 결과를 도출해 낸다. 결국, 쟁점은 (1) high-status에 반영된 특권 네트워크 포지션의 기업이 주변 기업보다 더 많은 embeddedness관계를 유지함으로써, 더 큰 이점을 얻을 수 있다는 결과와 (2) mixed relational strategy에서 은행은 시장에서 이용가능한 거래가가 적어지고, market share가 줄어든다는 부분이다. (2)에서 측정결과는 기업생존에 긍정적일 수 있었지만, 실질적으로 arm’s-length ties는 주로 부동산 사업에서 사용되는 관계인데 행위자의 관심과 이익을 위한 거래 조건이라는 기준이 있고, embedded ties는 신뢰와 정보공유, 공동문제 해결 등의 객관화된 기준이 없는 상태에서 혼합이 가능할까? 결과적으로 Uzzi 연구는 (2)을 주장했지만 산업분야에서 성과를 위해 기업이 적용하는 전략전 관계에 대해 어떤 것이 더 타당성이 있다는 일반적인 방향성은 힘들 것이라 생각이 든다.
